New Year's Eve 2012

We welcomed the new year 2012 in the company of good friends and a lot of good food and nasty booze.

This year we made the long MRT ride over to Sengkang to Rosas' and Mark's flat for our small and intimate New Year's eve party. Everybody was in attendance. It was a potluck dinner, so I made my Pinoy-style spaghetti and Babykoy bought some really yummy American cheesecake at the store. We forgot to bring along the bottle of white wine that was left unopened from Christmas eve, but Julian came prepared with his bottles of hard liquor that promised to bring us us down before the stroke of midnight.

And what a feast it was! Everybody wanted to try everything on the table, but we could only eat so much. Hehe.

So we drank Midori and Bacardi in between, and just went back to the table to eat some more whenever we feel like we have had a drink too many. Teehee.

It was also on this night that Julian and Nin officially announced the happy news that they are back together, and engaged! Congratulations, guys! We are sooo happy for you! Looking forward to coming to your 12-12-12 wedding.

A game of Forbidden Words, 500 Days of Summer, a cameo appearance by Gabby, and two wedding proposal videos later, it was midnight and we were ushering in the brand new year!

Cheers to 2012! And may this year be even more exciting and more blessed for everyone of us.

- A writing job that pays well.

- Jan 29 - my birthday spent with my sweetie

- Finding a job in Singapore and being a full-time wife to Babykoy. Conquering my fear of the kitchen and learning how to cook! Making new friends in my workplace and having enough moolah to send to my family back home.

- Dieting.

- Fortunately, no.

- My iPhone. Makes communication with friends and family back home soooo much easier!

Moving On To 2012

In a few days, we will be saying goodbye to 2011 and ushering in a new year. Fresh starts, new beginnings, one can even say rebirths of some sorts.

I am grateful for this year because a lot of great things transpired this year for me and my family. We have been so blessed, and we are so grateful.

Here's to saying the same for the coming year. May 2012 even be more fabulous and amazing for each and every one of us!

Singapore Christmas 2011

Hello, everybody! Merry Christmas to all of you! This greeting came in a day late because I had no time to go online as I was so busy wrapping gifts, making last minute trips to the mall or the grocery, and also cooking up a storm in my kitchen for our Noche Buena with friends and family. Now I can sit back, relax and write a quickie post while waiting for the laundry to finish in the wash (hehe!).

So how are you after all the holiday feasting that transpired over the weekend? I certainly missed my dad's tiim (chicken sauced in beer with herbs) and leche flan and crispy fried chicken. But I borrowed my Mom's delicious spaghetti recipe and cooked it here to serve to our guests, and it tasted just like my Mom's, so that seriously lessened the holiday homesickness. And everybody loved everything I prepared, so I am really, really tickled pink! Here's to more cooking and party hosting in 2012!

Me, I think I'm okay. Did not gorge too much on carbs and sweets, but I swear sometimes I still taste the roasted turkey every time I burp!

This year we decided to have some traditional roast turkey and some honey glazed ham, then I made some Pinoy style spaghetti, Chicken Stroganoff, and mashed potatoes with homemade gravy sauce. Our friends also brought leche flan and wine. And of course, the Christmas log cake! Yummy yummy!

It's not fancy but it sure did the job of making our Christmas away from home a lot more happy and enjoyable, not to mention delish!

More food, more booze, more gift giving!

Around midnight, we started exchanging gifts in between mouthfuls of cake and leche flan. Teehee. I was absolutely surprised when I opened my Christmas present from my hubby. I thought he was going to give me the Kate Spade bag I wanted, but what he gave me was much, much better! Let's just say that reading all my e-books will be a more enjoyable experience from now on! Thanks so much, sweetie! I love you!

It's the first Christmas I spent away from the Philippines, but this certainly was not the worst. In fact, it's one of the best and most special Christmases I've had in a long time because this Christmas was our first Christmas spent together as a married couple. Love love love!

Hello, Holidays!

I can't believe it's December again.

This year went by so fast. I can't believe I've been away from home for almost a year now, living in wedded bliss with my hubby in a land far, far away. (Haha!)

I miss my family more than ever now that the holidays are here. This will be a very different Christmas, indeed. Different because it will be the first that I will celebrate away from my family and my baby dog Maximus. It's also the first Christmas I will physically celebrate with Babykoy and my second family here in Singapore.

Pressure is on to find the perfect Christmas gift for the hubby. He changes his mind as often as traffic lights change colors. As of this writing, he says he wants a pair of boots. I am hoping that he will stick to this choice until Christmas day. Teehee.

I'm excited to prepare our Noche Buena here. Well, more of excited in a terrified kind of way. Haha. Oh God, I hope it will not turn out to be an epic failure. I have never hosted a dinner party before and have never cooked for a whole bunch of people. I'm scared and excited at the same time. I'm just praying that it will all be a gastronomic success.

Work has been fun so far and I'm settling in quite nicely with the team and the workload. There was one incident with one of the team managers, but that's water under the bridge now. Let's just say that now he's wishing he never posted that status update in the first place.

It has been a great year. A kind year. A rewarding and magical year, and we're all looking forward to a great holiday season.

It doesn't matter where I am, who I'm with or what I'm going through. I see Christmas decorations and hear holiday carols being played everywhere, and I am instantly in a happy holiday mood. No room for Grinches here because it simply is the most wonderful time of the year!

Er, this is hard. When was the last time I danced in front of a crowd, on a stage, complete with choreography and costume? 1985, Talent Week in school, I danced to the tune of Madonna's "Dress You Up". WTF. I don't dance to perform. I just dance because I feel like dancing. I've got good rhythm to be a natural one. What's even cooler is that I'm also really good at intentionally not being in rhythm. Side Trip: Johor Bahru

The hubby and I spent last Saturday at Johor Bahru, Malaysia. It was meant to be a side trip before I flew back home to Manila. I have never visited in the past and been planning to for ages, but either hubby was too busy or too lazy, or we didn't have a common free day for a trip there. Gladly, there was free time last weekend, so off we went.

We were also hoping we could hit two birds with one stone: get another 30-days stay on my passport upon returning to Singapore. Teehee.

And because it's Hari Raya weekend, we were prepared for the long queues which were waiting for us at the Kranji MRT station. I think we waited for half an hour before we could hop on to the express bus to JB, and another half an hour at JB immigration.

By the time we got to City Square Mall, we were already weak and dizzy with hunger. After scouting for a good place to eat, we settled for Vivo Pizza and Panini for some baked rice and chocolate shakes.

We booked a room at the newly renovated Citrus Hotel which was conveniently located right next to City Square Mall. And since this trip was kind of a spur of the moment thing, we really didn't mind if it's a twin or a queen bed, as long as there's hot and cold water and wi-fi in the room!

Our room was so cool and comfy we just wanted to stay in, lie down the bed and be old lazy farts while watching movies. Yes, even if what's on was the ridiculously dramatic Pearl Harbour. Thank heavens for these doughnuts which just made the experience a lot more bearable.

We had dinner at Marrybrown at the mall. I have to admit I was only drawn in by the swing seats inside the restaurant. Servings were small, plain and looked unappetizing. Root beer float was not cold. Coke did not have ice. But yes, the chicken was good. I kinda thought it tasted like the chicken in Tropical Hut. This was their only saving grace.

I fell asleep shortly after dinner. When I woke up again, it was three in the morning and the hubby was snoring softly on his bed. A B-movie was on in the telly so I just stared at it until I fell asleep again.

The following morning, after showering and packing up our things, we headed to the hotel cafe for the breakfast buffet. I love breakfast buffets, especially when there's sausage or bacon around. I'm not much into breads. I'm more the fried-rice-and- eggs kind of girl. No wonder I have a tummy this big!

Some eggs, smokey beef bacon, chicken sausages, potato wedges

and veggie fried rice. Burp!

There were no more queues going out of Malaysia this time, and after a few routine questions from the immigration officer in JB, we breezed past through the gates to catch the Causeway Link bus to Woodlands. Thankfully, there were no delays at the immigration in Singapore as well, and I was given another 30 days here before flying out to Manila next month. Yay!

I remember our old house in Alabang and the countless days I spent holed up in our small bedroom, listening to a cassette tape album of Cathy Dennis' Move To This. This was my favorite track from the album.

At twelve years old I was already beginning my days as a music fan, collecting music through erstwhile cassette tapes, wearing them out with fast forwards, rewinds and auto reverses. Oh my, I can't believe auto reverse was the coolest thing at that time! I am old. Haha!

I'm doing the 30 Day Song Challenge now. This should be fun, even if my best girlfriends seem to be too busy now to do this one with me.

First on the list challenge is definitely the most difficult one! I don't have just one favorite song! I just don't!!! For me, I have one favorite song for each music genre, per year, per artist or per band etc.

But to be fair, I checked my iPod for my most played track, and this is what I found. So I guess this one's got to be my most favorite song of late.

Couch Potato 101

I have been married to my bed and my laptop for the past few weeks. Weight has been ballooning and hair has been growing curlier and longer by the minute. Close to being called a recluse if not for the weekly trips to the mall and the church. Been living the life of a certified couch potato. Or in this case, bed potato? Waaah.

I quit my job last month for a hundred different reasons. It was a huge risk on my part, but I certainly did not want to be doing that job for the next two years of my life here. So right now I'm still in search of the next big adventure in my career. The curse of restlessness will forever be inside me, I guess, so wish me luck. Teehee.

But I have not been completely unproductive. I am the master of our kitchen now and have been cooking up some delicious meals for the hubby and the brother-in-law. I miss my daddy's home-cooked meals, so I have been texting and emailing my old man for his recipes. He's been very supportive and cooperative everytime. Both my husband and brother-in-law have been complaining about how they're clothes are starting to be tighter now and how big their tummies have become because of what I've been serving them lately. Yes, if I'm going to be overweight, might as well bring them down with me. Wahaha.

And because I have more free time in my hands now, I was able to catch up on all the shows that I missed from the previous months.

Starting off with HBO's Game of Thrones. Ohemgee, I am such a fan of this series! I love anything medieval, anything with kings and queens, lords and ladies, dragons and other supernatural beings. Game of Thrones has all of that stuff, including lots of sex and violence. Haha. I think I finished watching it in just one day.

Only problem is that I have this whole year of waiting for the next season to start. I'm so impatient to find out what will happen next that I started reading the books as well. Talk about geeky!

Next on the list: The Vampire Diaries.

After watching the first two installments of Twilight on the big screen, I just completely lost interest in this whole vampire-werewolf-human story lines that seemed to take over the boob tube.

But I decided to give this one a chance, and ended up marathoning the entire first and second seasons.

Elena Gilbert is hot. I mean, how in the world can someone be that pretty? So are the vampire brothers Damon and Stefan Salvatore. But I was actually more fascinated with the characters that surround this tortured love triangle, like Aunt Jenna and Jeremy, BFFs Bonnie and Caroline, ex-bf Matt and brooding Tyler. This one has a better story line and storytelling is pretty fast-paced. Good thing season 3 will be this September, yay!

I know, I know, it's not the most intelligent and thought-provoking show on earth, but I like a scandalous frenemy tale from time to time, top that with scheming spoiled kids and their devious sets of parents. I liked Serena in the first season, but she really gave sluttiness a bad name in seasons 3 and 4. So now I'm a Blair Waldorf and Dorota fan. I think those two are plain hilarious.

I also love Lily Bass and her sense of style. She's always impeccably dressed. I loved each and every dress she wore in all the episodes. And her hair! Her hair looks like spun gold. Sigh!

(Sheesh, I cannot believe I'm talking about clothes and hair all because of this show.) New season is coming out next month, so here's to more gossip!

Right now am trying to finish the third and fourth seasons of True Blood. And I've also started watching this great new series "The Killing", only it always leaves me with a heavy heart every time I finish an episode. It's not exactly the most uplifting story in the world, but it has a very interesting story line (I just love whodunits) and excellent storytelling.

If being a couch potato were a career, I'd be raking in the big bucks now. Teehee.

Weekend In Kuala Lumpur

The hubby and I got to visit Kuala Lumpur for the very first time last weekend. It's great that we got to experience the city together, just the two of us. It made the trip more special, like a second honeymoon, especially now that we're only days away from our first wedding anniversary! It was a short but very relaxing trip, a much needed respite from the drudgery of work.

A week before our said trip, I took on the task of finding budget accommodations which did not have bed bugs or moldy bathrooms or ax murderers lurking in dark alleys. Must also be accessible to public transportation and the tourist attractions of the city. It's a good thing that Kuala Lumpur is teeming with hotels, b & b's and hostels, and there are lots of hotel booking/ hotel finder services in Google, which made it a whole lot easier for me.

So after comparing a ton of different hotels and their rates per night, I finally booked us one Deluxe Double room at Chinatown Boutique Hotel for around RM 250, for 3 days and 2 nights. No breakfast included, but we got 2 complimentary water bottles for each night, plus do-it-your-own coffee, cable TV, and most importantly, unlimited WiFi access in our hotel room.

The hotel has a great location, only a stone's throw away from bustling Chinatown and its numerous food stalls and flea markets. It took a while for us to find it, because we alighted at the station from the other end. If we got off at Plaza Rakyat station, it would have taken us only 15 minutes by foot. But whichever train station you go to from the hotel, you can get to Kuala Lumpur City Centre within 10 to 15 minutes.

Oh, I forgot to tell you that we almost missed our coach on the day of our departure, because we slept through the alarm! Good thing I checked my mobile phone for the time, and when I saw that it was already 7 am, we literally jumped out of bed and into the shower. In less than 15 minutes we were ready and dressed and waiting at the lobby for our cab which will take us to the city. We made it to our pick-up point at Concorde Hotel in Orchard with 5 minutes to spare, thankful that morning rush hour traffic in Singapore is not as horrendous as morning rush hour traffic in Manila.

We booked one-way coach tickets to Kuala Lumpur from Luxury Tours and Travel ($51 per pax, meal included). The 5-hour trip was very comfortable indeed. Our double-decker coach came equipped with personal television monitors with speakers in the headrest. The seats are plush enough to sleep and relax in. Would definitely book another coach trip with these guys in the future. We opted to fly back to Singapore on Sunday morning, was able to book very cheap tickets through Jetstar.com, but since the airport is almost an hour away from Chinatown, next time we visit, we will be travelling by coach both ways.

Damn comfy.

A backpacker in the making?

Thankfully we didn't get lost around here.

Any newbie can tour this fascinating city with no problem.

After checking in and getting our electronic keys from reception, we rested for an hour or so at our very cute hotel room, then decided to have an early dinner at Nando's, which was just right around the corner. Their chicken pita in lemon and herbs did not blow me away, but we absolutely loved their Lighten Up Chocolate Cake.

It was too late in the day to go to Genting Highlands, or even visit the Batu Caves, so the hubby and I decided to go to the Petronas Towers while the weather was still good and take as much pictures as we possible could.

It was exhilarating to see the Twin Towers up close. Even more exhilarating to see it tall and glittering against the dark Malaysian skies. I just loved it.

We had nothing else planned for that night. Since the Suria KLCC Shopping Centre was right beside the Petronas Towers, we decided to kill time by watching Captain America. Teehee. Two tickets in 2D cost us RM 28, pretty expensive compared to movie tickets here in Singapore. But the movie theatre was huge and the seats are very plush and comfy, so no complaints from me here. (Oh, but I thought the movie was pretty lame.)

It was close to midnight when the movie ended. We decided against taking a taxi back to the hotel because of the seemingly round-the-clock traffic jam everywhere in Kuala Lumpur. After four stops in the LRT, we walked a couple of blocks and prayed that no crazy man wielding a knife would suddenly jump out from behind a lamp post. As soon as we got back to our room, we quickly took a shower and plopped to bed and fell asleep in minutes.

On our second night, we met our good friends Fred and Gladz for dinner right there on Petaling Street (Chinatown). We originally planned to go to KL all at the same time, but Fred had something to do on Friday night, and we were already booked for a morning trip. After leaving messages in Facebook and with our respective hotel desks, we were able to meet at last. Roaming services are always so unreliable! Grrr.

Ordered platefuls of satay and fried rice and veggies and iced teas and beer. It was a hot night, but we totally didn't mind because there was a festive atmosphere in that small and busy street. From our table it was the best place to people-watch. There were loads of tourists eating and drinking, and vendors selling them merchandise. It reminded me of Chinatown in Manila. One Chinese restaurant even played Freddie Aguilar's 'Anak' over the loud speakers. Hehe. It's been a while since my last real vacation and I almost forgot how wonderful it is to travel. I simply cannot wait to do it again.

So over fun talk, delicious food and ice cold beers, we planned our next destination. Let us all drink to that!

For My Girl Maila

Dear Birthday Girl,

First of all, may I just say that if I were there today, we would definitely be stuffing our faces now with authentic Italian food followed by a really sinful chocolate cake to celebrate this thirtysomething birthday of yours. But since you're there and I'm still here, this little love letter will just have to suffice. Better than nothing, right? Teehee!

Since it's your birthday, it's only natural that I write about the things that I wish for you this year and the years to come. But what do I wish for a woman who already has everything?

You already have a family who adores you and loves to spend every waking moment with you. Lexi thinks you're a super mom, Lanz thinks you're a rock star, and Lloyd only has eyes for you!

You have a steady stream of clients who not only do business with you, but also share unique bonds of friendships with you.

You have wonderful parents, a brother and a sister, who turn to you for support and inspiration whenever, wherever.

You have a large circle of friends who think you're such an amazing, loving and generous friend and confidante. Ahem, me included.

You cook like a pro. You're a born businesswoman and leader, nurturer and adviser. You make everybody feel right at home with you.

So I've given it some thought. Actually I racked my brains (hehe), and came up with this little list.

- I wish that there'd be 48 hours in a day. That way you can devote the first 12 hours to the family, the next 12 hours to do the work that you do at home and in your office, the next 12 hours to spend with us girlfriends, and the remaining 12 hours just for peaceful and uninterrupted sleep. Wouldn't that be just awesome?

- I wish for a happy pill that you can pop in your mouth whenever you feel distressed, stressed or lonely. A happy pill for every time you're feeling unMailalike. And I'm not talking about Ecstasy here, ok?

- I also wish that there'd be some way for us to taste and eat all the delectable dishes that you cook and post pictures of on Facebook with just a snap of a finger.

- I wish there'd be another baby in the family, because you can't waste good genes like that. I'm sure Lloyd feels the same way! Haha!

- I wish for a new business venture that will have you wearing a toque or a nice pretty apron on a daily basis, and the smell of freshly baked goodies will be wafting from the kitchen ovens.

- I wish for a week-long out-of-the-country or out-of-town trip with just us girls for company, drinking margaritas in hotels, satisfying all food cravings, exploring, sightseeing, cam-whoring, people-watching and just spending the day like carefree bums on a mission.

- Lastly and more importantly, I wish that everyday you will wake up feeling loved and cherished, energized and inspired, joyful and hopeful, sexy and irresistible, with a sense of childlike wonder and optimism. Everyday.

I know it's not easy being you, but everyday you prove to me that it can be done. You make it look so easy and fun. Everyday you inspire me. I am so proud of the woman that you have become and the woman you continue to be. We thank our lucky stars that we have your never-ending and unselfish love.

Happy birthday, my dear! I know it's another number added to your years, but you don't need to worry. You definitely do not look a day older.

Another Exercise In Gratitude

I was the welcome party of one yesterday for my good friend Ely. Yes, she packed her bags and left her husband to join the rat race here in Singapore. Haha! She also dreams of becoming an OFW and land a job here, hopefully within the next 2 months.

She was tense for days, imagining all sorts of scenarios at the Immigration gates. I'm sure you've heard a lot of horror stories of people being off-loaded or detained for hours in the interrogation room. (This sounds terribly familiar, although mine was only for a few minutes. Still I was interrogated, so screw them!)

But thankfully, Ely got through immigration with no trouble and no harrasment, and her flight arrived on time. I got to the airport to find her there with her bags and a bunch of Singapore maps, busy texting people in her three mobile phones.

First thing we did was find her a place to stay. She said she'd be staying at one of our former officemate's house, located somewhere on Joo Chiat Road. For $10 a day, I thought that wasn't too shabby.

I spoke too soon. The cab driver took us to a small street lined with pubs and eating houses and 4-star hotels. Apparently that was Joo Chiat Road, and there I was thinking of an HDB/condo environment.

Anyway, we got off the cab and called one of our former officemates also living at the same address to check if we were on the correct street. She told us the building was right beside the KTV bar.

Oh-kay. We saw the KTV bar, and right next to it was a ramshackle building with filthy stairs and walls in need of a paint job.

I paused and asked Ely, "Are you sure you want to stay here?"

Ely must have been too tired and too sun-drenched to utter a coherent reply, but we still managed to haul her luggage to two flights of filthy stairs and ring the doorbell which wasn't working.

Our former officemate opened the door for us and apologized for the mysterious pool of water that accumulated right in front of the door. We squished our way to the tiny and cramped hallway and then she showed us the room where Ely would be staying in.

I didn't know whether to laugh or feel sorry for Ely when I saw the look on her face. I thought it was a mixture of disbelief and hopelessness and surrender. She definitely would not be able to stand the living conditions there. I mean, share that space with ten or eleven other people? Sardines much?

We thanked our ex-officemate for her time but told her that Ely was not at all comfortable staying on the upper bunk bed. She was scared she might fall and break her hip in her sleep.

Good thing Ely knew somebody who was staying in another apartment somewhere in Eunos, and there was a vacant room that she could stay in.

After another cab ride to the MRT station, we were met by fellow Pinay named Constance and she very kindly took us to the apartment. (While walking, she told us of her horrible experiences before she could even get here to SG. Twice she was off-loaded! Good Lord!)

Thank God the house was much cleaner, and there were only five people living in it. We even met the Chinese man who owned the place. He was very nice to us, showing Ely how to work the appliances, telling her the house rules and giving her her set of keys.

Only then were we able to breathe a sigh of relief.

I let Ely take a shower first, and then I brought her with me to my side of Singapore (because she's staying in the east while I'm staying in the west).

I gave her a crash course in the MRT and bus system in Singapore first and then we immediately braved the rush hour throngs. Whoopee! She loved-hated it! Haha!

She loved our place and couldn't stop gushing how much space we had, a far cry from the first house that she saw here. So it's decided that when she finds work here, she would be our new housemate. Keeping my fingers crossed!

I got busy with dinner. Prepared some Alfredo pasta, tossed salad and roast dinner as a welcome meal for my wide-eyed friend. The hubby got home just in time to join us and I was pretty sure that everybody had happy tummies last night. Mission accomplished!

Yesterday made me realize that I have so many good things in my life to be grateful for.

I am grateful that we have a nice and comfortable house to live in here, and good, stable jobs that pay well. From now on, I will stop complaining that I have a crappy rest day and a monotonous desk job, because others out there don't even have a job at all.

I am grateful everyday.

I Am Thankful

For the wife who says it's hotdogs tonight, because she is home with me and not out with someone else.

For the husband who is on the sofa being a couch potato, because he is home with me and not out at the bars.

For the teenager who is complaining about doing dishes, because it means she is at home, not on the streets.

For the taxes I pay, because it means I am employed.

For the mess to clean after a party, because it means I have been surrounded by friends.

For the clothes that fit a little too snug, because it means I have enough to eat.

For my shadow that watches me work, because it means I am out in the sunshine.

For a lawn that needs mowing, windows that need cleaning, and gutters that need fixing, because it means I have a home.

For all the complaining I hear about the government, because it means we have freedom of speech.

For the parking spot I find at the far end of the parking lot, because it means I am capable of walking and I have been blessed with transportation.

For my huge heating bill, because it means I am warm.

For the lady behind me in church who sings off key, because it means I can hear.

For the pile of laundry and ironing, because it means I have clothes to wear.

For weariness and aching muscles at the end of the day, because it means I have been capable of working hard.

For the alarm that goes off in the early morning hours, because it means I am alive.

Some Mad Musings

It's almost six months that I've been here in Singapore. I can't believe in another six months, it will be Christmas again. Time really flies. In fact, it just zooms past.

I still get homesick, especially when I'm surrounded by things which remind me of home. I miss the house, the family, the baby dog, the homecooked meals, the girlfriends, the spur-of-the-moment dinner/lunch/coffee dates etc. But the loneliness, it's manageable now, unlike the previous weeks when all I wanted to do was book a one-way ticket home.

I just keep reminding myself that I'm not a single girl anymore, and all my actions, thoughts and decisions will inadvertently affect my husband, our marriage and the future that we're building together.

It's not just about me now. This is my married life. The real deal. The happy ever after (and then some), and it's unfolding right here, right now.

For a newbie wifey like myself, I think I'm doing pretty okay. Work takes up most of my time, and I get home pretty late everyday because of my work schedule. But hubby is okay with that. He still waits up and joins me for late dinners, even if it consists only of chicken nuggets or tuna curry. He will eat anything I serve him and finish it with gusto. I know, I trained him well, haha!

But on weekends we make sure we go on our weekly hubby-wifey dates. It doesn't matter where we go or what we do. These dates are the highlights of our week and they get us through my boring and mundane (and his toxic and busy) days at work.

I'm catering (Destiny's Child, y'all) to my man and I've never been happier.

Sometimes we get these little disagreements, but they never escalate into big free-for-all, death-in-a-cell kind of fights. We really do get along, thank heavens for that!

In the last six months that I've been here, I learned, realized and did a lot of stuff:

I have stopped converting Singapore Dollars to Philippine Pesos whenever I need to buy something from a store or a restaurant. It's just useless to complain how everything is expensive here. I'm just thankful that I'm earning more than enough and can still buy what I want.

I have stopped using my posh British accent and my cool American slang just so I can be understood easily by the locals. Sometimes I just laugh at myself when I say "Your lesson is at tree-tirty, ok-lah?" or "Cannot oredi, am full oredi-lah!" Yeah, I also use the 'lah' at the end. Ok-lah?

This country is so humid and so hot it's crazy. There are days I would go out and feel faint because of the heat. A few hours later the rain would pour in buckets. I now take multivitamins every single day just so I won't fall sick, and so far they have been very effective (knock on wood!).

I gained weight (don't know how much!) and cannot fit into my old clothes anymore. Egad!

My hair is screaming for a REBOND. And I cannot have it done here because it's so damn expensive and nearly not as great as what I get from my trusty salon back home.

I now have a savings account (yay!) and I plan to save all the money I can save to start a small business.

I don't feel anxious anymore when I'm about to try cooking a new dish. My previous attempts to cook something edible (better yet delicious) have been very successful, and this has bolstered my confidence level to a notch higher. My daddy is so proud of me!

If before walking was a bleak and arduous task for me, now I have come to accept that it's a part of life and there's no running away from it. Ahaha!

I still want to raise and build a family in our hometown. I can't see myself staying in this place for a long time (even if the hubby seriously disagrees). It's okay to work and live here for a while, save enough money, but it will just be a temporary home to me.

If the Philippines had a reliable and efficient public transportation system like the one we have here in Singapore, this can pave the way to bigger and greater things for the country. I'm not kidding.

Ode To Friendster

I just logged in to my Friendster account today, after what seemed like ages. My date of last log in was January 2010! Poor Friendster. If not for the news that they would be deleting old photos and testimonials, I wouldn't have even bothered visiting the site.

I remember being hooked to this site years ago. It didn't do much social networking-wise, because all you could see then were photos, dates of last log-in and inbox messages. Basically it taught the fundamentals of cyberstalking. Wehehe. What it lacked then in features and applications, Facebook capitalized on, completely obliterating Friendster in the years that followed.

However, what I did like about Friendster were the testimonials and the Who's Viewed My Profile feature.

Back then, it was a complete ego boost whenever I saw a crush or an ex of a crush in my Who's Viewed Me list. And reading those testimonials felt like reading yearbook write-up after yearbook write-up from my friends, crushes, relatives and colleagues, telling the world how wonderful I am! Haha!

So before they totally got wiped off in the cyberworld, I grabbed a few of the nicest and craziest testimonials my friends wrote over the years. It's so weird to be reading them again now, because I was such a totally different person then, with different priorities, living in a totally different world. Ah, life!

Angel and I don't belong in the same barkada but we get along pretty well, as in pretty well... Coz one thing I love about her is that, she's like a jukebox, she just knows lotsa songs. Maybe it's inherent for someone with a mind of a very artistic writer. She has probably come across all the lyrics of the songs...I bow to you as the Song Hits Queen!!! Well, Angel, I just believe that music is what pulled us together coz remember the time when I had to share some songs sent by Dennis, it was just so memorable. Aside from the fact that you're easy to get along with. Kasi naman, I also admire your fine sense of humor. Anyway, thank God for Friendster, we belong in one network so I hope to hear more from you...Mwwahhh!!!

Angel and I became friends in 1997 (thanks to her sister and my beloved "palangga" a.k.a. Ann). We connect in a gazillion ways and I can say that she's truly a breath of fresh air. She may seem quiet at first, but once you get to know her, you'd realize that you're blessed to have her around. You can talk to her about anything (even the meanest, greenest and craziest things about love and relationships... asus!) Angel loves to write. She has written romance novels with bonus theme songs for most of her friends. She also has a good ear for music (she's my go-to person when it comes to remembering song titles and melodies). Angel is one great catch! Mr. *&^$%, Mr. %$#@&* were just so blind to see it. Tsk...Tsk...Tsk... Life is too short, you guys! A smart, sweet, adorable and friendly lady like her deserves nothing but the BEST. I miss you and Ann so much! I'm looking forward to seeing you both soon. Love you! Mwah!

si ate?! naku, kung meron pang mas loloka sa'kin, siguro sya na yun eh. you'll think she's prim and proper..pero pag nasa house na yan.. parang ayoko ng ituloy. =) pinakapeborit kong ginagawa nya yung sumasayaw na sinasadya nyang wala sa timing with matching palakpak pa! mahilig din yang mangiliti. at ta-timingan pa nyang sobrang helpless ka pg kikilitiin ka nya. sobra din nya i-baby talk si coochie puppy namin. she calls our puppy woppy, diddiwup, coochiekins, my love etc. kaya ang coochie ay lalung nagiging spoiled. =) she loves to eat and pag nagcrave sya for something, masusunod talaga. she loves shopping din! impulsive buyer pa. she's very pihikan to guys and i know guys get intimidated with her. seriously, matino naman 'tong si ate eh. =) suplada at first but she's one true friend. she's a good listener and gives good advice. she never runs out of kwentos and jokes. never a dull moment with her...she's a good writer & dreams of having her works published someday. sana matupad.

Angel, ang tawag ko sa kanya writer, ang galing nya sumulat at magkwento. I remember nung college pag may hindi ako napanood na movie sa kanya na lang ako nagpapakwento because she tells the story in detail and may suspense pa kaya para na rin ako nanood. Slow sya, I mean super bagal kumilos, sya yung tipo na hindi nagpapanic, as in. =) Tipong natataranta ka na, sya nagsusuklay pa ng kilay. Hehehe. Leader sya kung saan kakain ang barkada pag lunch. Syempre Migui’s. =)
I love her stories. I love the twist in her stories. Sweet Angel, I miss you very much. Supportive sya sa barkada kung tama ang ginagawa pero pag mali ka mali ka talaga sa kanya. I've known Angel for a year now ay grabe kakulit po nyan u will never have a dull tym with this gurl everytym na break na namin eh yayakap yan at magsasabi nang friends, lets CR ourselves. Grabe my friend nakakamiss ung block scheds dun ata tau nging super close.. Remember ung mga chicka chicka natin??? At ung paisipan ng mga jologs na names ewan ko ba kinareer mo ata un kc lagi kang me baong jologs na names sna nxt shift block scheds na ulit. Kidding asyd, I like Angel. Si Angel ang creative writer sa barkadang labindalawa. Kakaiba ang mga twist ng stories nya, bestseller nga pag napublish lahat yun, daig pa nya sila Nicholas Sparks at James Patterson pagnagkataon. Certified music lover din. Sabi nya collector daw sya ng mga CDs pero nagkaron din yan mga cassette collections. Super baaaagal din nyan kya nga turtle give ko ng debut nya. Di ko makakalimutan birthday nya kc asyd frm magkasunod kmi, don lang nakumpleto yung barkada namin sa event na yun kahit na sobrang layo ng place! RAMOSO! That's how I call her. Though most of the people know her as Angel, her real name is Rouselle. Wow! Simula pa lang complicated na! Hehe! ;-) Well, she's not. Anyway, she's the reason why I always have an LSS. She knows a lot of songs, of different genres. Be it from the present going back to the oldies. If you heard a good song and you would want to know the title or the artist, well, she's the best person to ask. Just give her a stanza and voila! Research done! Remember, Too Young by Jack Wagner? Haha! "She can name that tune in 3 notes!" Hehe! ;-) Angel, we somehow share the same principle, like this one "Ang off ay off!" Haha! Don’t you dare try! We already have plans on our days off! Hmm... ano nga ba? Anyway, OT is definitely not in our vocab! Kahit kaladkarin pa kami papasok ng ofis hindi kami mag-OOT! NooooooHH! Hahaha! ;-) Tigas talaga ng ulo! ;-)

Hmmm.. C Angel she's like the female version of Mr. Joe (Joe D' Mango). Great in giving advice at parang 80GB Ipod Video ung utak nyan. Ang daming alam na songs at movies. If you’re bored and wala kaung makausap, kausapin nio lng to at ma-eentertain ka na at the same time may matutunan ka pa sa mga cnbi nia. Kakamiss ang buhay sa Products at sa Bananas. Sana makapunta ulit ako dyan sa ofis. Ikamusta mo na lang ako sa kanila, hopefully makapunta na ko dyan ulit.

Si Ainshor: Ang kaibigan kong pinaglihi sa balot, barkada ko na simula pa kinder ako, kapitbahay at kabusmate na kina Tita Terry na tiboli. Isang araw magka-away pero kinabukasan kalaro ko na ulit :-/Katelebabad ko pa sa telepono (umaabot ng more than 1 hour!) samantalang 3 bahay lang naman ang pagitan namin.Inampon nako sa Bene (mas madalas ko pa makasama ang high school friends niya kesa sa sarili kong HS friends!)Ang salarin who came up with our name "YA" na naging "YA Bulok!". Eversince talaga siya ang source ng mga kwento (barbero)...nung elementary kami ang madalas ikwento niya yung mga dwende sa playground ng Bene,nung HS naman ang kwento nya yung mga kalokohan ni Suzanne at mga nabasa niya sa Moneysaver, nung college naman yung iba't ibang sexcapades ng mga tibo sa St. Scho, nung nagwork naman mga kalokohan ng mga nagttrabaho sa call center (kasama na dun yung crush ko nung HS kasi mukhang mabait na tarantado na ngayon). A very special and incredible guy was born on this day 31 years ago.

This guy grew up, chased girls, got chased back, held a job, had his heart broken, fell in love again, moved to another country, enjoyed the single guy's life, and then eventually met and married me.

Twenty something years had to pass before our paths would cross.

Twenty something years before I would realize that there's someone like him for someone like me.

Had I known that he was the man God has prepared for me, I would've convinced my parents to move in to the same neighbourhood when I was four. That way we would've been inseparable, even in diapers.

It makes me wonder now. What was I doing all the time I hadn't met him?

Well, I would like to think that I was a happy, independent, strong and sensible woman who had fun when she could without giving her folks a heart attack or waking up one day penniless.

I went through awful heartbreaks and meltdowns, switched jobs, moved houses, changed hairstyles, gained and lost weight, gained and lost friends, dated a few wrong people and had a good laugh about it.

I thought my life before him was as good as it got, because I was perfectly content with it. I even had my own little plan that if I would not be lucky enough to meet the right man, then I'd be single with a very adorable baby.

I did not realize that my life was about to become a whole lot happier and much more beautiful.

They were so right when they said that you really do not know what you're missing until it's finally standing right in front of you.

Now I can't imagine living my life without this wonderful guy. He has turned my world upside down, but in a very good way. He has become such a big part of my life it's intoxicating yet terrifying at the same time.

In him I found the true meaning of love, friendship and happiness.

Nothing in my past can compare to what happiness I now feel and what love I have for him now.

Everyday I thank God that He gave me someone like him to love.

Everyday I'm glad that out of the billion people here on Earth, we found each other.

And today I'm especially grateful because today we celebrate the day that he was born to this world to make our lives more meaningful and more wonderful.

Happy, happy birthday to my wonderful husband... I love you so much!

What's Up?

I'm seeing cobwebs in this blog.

It has been so long since my last post. Work has been taking up too much of my time. Aaaarggghh. The people at our headquarters weren't kidding when they told me that it's gonna be work work work from now on.

Sigh. When I get home everyday from work, all I wanna do is curl up in bed next to my hubby and just doze off. But not before watching an episode of Criminal Minds. Teehee.

And the summer heat here in Singapore? Oh my goodness. I can break into a sweat even while taking a cold shower.

I miss being a bum. Why is it not possible to earn money and get rich just by being a bum? Somebody should start doing a study on this, you know.

The last couple of weeks, hubby and I have been trying different food in different restaurants in the city. So far, am super enjoying it, being the foodie that I am. Which also means that my clothes are starting to get tighter around the waist. Waaah.

Once the excitement of visiting all the tourist destinations in Singapore wears off, all you have left to do here is explore and try the city's hundreds of restaurants and coffee shops.

Or watch movies.

Or shop.

And shop some more.

I'm still adjusting to my new life here. If it weren't for my hubby, I would have purchased a plane ticket back home to Manila weeks ago. The homesickness and loneliness can be unbearable sometimes. It makes me think how my hubby survived all those months without me here. He's a lot tougher than I gave him credit for.

Now when I feel like going back home, I just think about the iPad 2 and the LV Neverfull and the Kate Spade hobo bag and the Phillip Stein watch etc. I wanna buy in the next few months and that's enough to make me stop whining and being a drama queen and all. Teehee.

I miss you all! I pray that homesickness doesn't get the better of me!

Date Night

Wow. I can't believe I have time to blog today!

The last few weeks had been so busy and exhausting.

One thing's for sure, though. I miss my no-work weekends.

I really, really miss them. I feel cheated when I go out on weekend mornings to go to work and my husband is still peacefully snoring on the bed.

It's so hard to feel excited to get out of the house when all I can hear before I step out of it is the silent whir of the air conditioning units from the other rooms. Sigh.

I've totally started a whole new routine here. When the rest of the world is dreading Mondays, I'm actually looking forward to them because Mondays are my rest days.

Well, technically not 'rest' day, because there are still so many things to do around the house. Like do the laundry, clean the room, buy groceries, catch a few winks, iron clothes, prepare a home-cooked meal for the hubby and just catch up on my favorite shows on my lappy.

It's like one day is not enough for a superwoman like me.

So last Monday, I decided I needed to take a break from all the wifey duties and just went to the city to take the hubby out on a date. We wanted to try the food at Applebee's in Somerset, so that's where we went right after I picked up Babykoy from work.

A beer and a raspberry iced tea to cool us down.

The cameraphobe strikes again!

Babykoy ordered this huge plate of Tilapia Parmesan (still no meat for him until after Holy Week) which really tasted delicious. The only thing he left on the plate was the slice of garlic bread. He said it tasted dry.

I was craving for some mean and greasy cheeseburger and fries. Their French Fries were really yummy and flavorful, however, their bacon cheeseburger left a lot to be desired. I wanted to ask for more cheese! It just tasted bland and oily. But I couldn't waste a big burger like that, so I had to finish it or the hubby would give me a good spanking. I had to make do with ketchup and some salt.

After dinner, we went to some stores to do a little bit of shopping. My mood lifted dramatically when I saw all the bags and tops on sale, but I stopped myself because I really needed to buy nice comfy shoes to wear to work. I can buy the bags next month. Wahaha.

Comfy shoes = happy feet!

And then we realized it was getting a bit late, so we dropped by this cute ice cream shop for some caramel hazelnut ice cream before taking the bus ride home.

It was a fun date night for both of us.

Such a stress reliever.

If only we can do this more often.

Homesick

I think I spoke too soon when I said this new job would not be stressful or toxic.

It's a walk in the park, actually, compared to the last job I held at home, talking non-stop on the phone for a whole shift.

But this one has its own kind of stress, too, you know.

I'm still learning the ropes, but I have to admit, trying to commit to memory all the company's SOPs and course fees and student names and schedules is a bitch.

It doesn't help, too, that children here all have three names with only three to four letters in them (Lee Shin Ling, Xin Ling Xiu, Xuan Tee Lin), and that they all look alike!

I guess I'm just feeling lonely. And a little homesick now.

When I think about the next two years of my life wearing stuffy suits, generating reports, updating files, checking that the music studios are ready for occupancy, enrolling students, collecting school fees, speaking with Singlish and Chinglish speaking customers, I can't help but miss home.

I can't help but miss my crazy family and even crazier dog.

Thank God I have Babykoy here with me to make me feel better on really bad days, to reassure me that I can do it. Otherwise I would've packed my suitcase faster than you can say macarena and flew back home.

But I'm embracing positivity. No room for negative thoughts.

Working Girl

Been a fun and busy first week at work.

Training, training and more training. Information overload. Had no idea so many types of pianos existed until last week. But this is just me feeling overwhelmed but not complaining at all. Am lucky that I wasn't just deployed to work without the proper training to do the job. Teehee.

For those of you not in the know, I'm working for a music school over here. I know, such a departure from my old job at the call centre back home. This job is still very customer-orientated, but less stressful and less toxic, and also more administrative. And I'm so okay with that!

The up side? I get to meet, play and be with kids everyday. Kids who are curious about music and eager to learn a musical instrument. (Kids and music: two of my most favorite things in the world. How cool is that?) There are some teenage students in the school too, but they're no fun like the little ones. They're always glued to their iPhones or iPods or busy practicing in the rehearsal room. Hehe.

Work is always music-filled. No need to turn on the radio because classical piano, violin or guitar music just wafts through the doors.

There are busy hours but there are also not so busy hours. Which means I have plenty of time to stretch my legs, get some fresh air, have a cuppa or just chat with colleagues.

The downside? Almost all the people I talk to everyday speak Mandarin. They can speak and understand English, but they much prefer speaking in their native tongue. I can't speak Mandarin to save my life. The only Mandarin word I know is 'Xie Xie' (thank you) but this definitely has to change if I want to build friendships with my customers.

As of this writing I have learned a new phrase: nǐ huì shuō yīngwén ma (Can you speak English?). Not much, I know. Slowly but surely.

So far, this is the only major challenge I can think of performing this new job. Oh, this and that I don't know anything about music. Can't read music, can't play music. But I love to listen to music.

My mentor and colleagues have been very helpful, warm and welcoming, and they all made me feel at home right from my first day on the job. They were so excited when they found out that I was going to be assigned to their branch because now there's somebody who could teach them to speak better English. Now this made me feel a little less lonely. If I was struggling with Mandarin, they were struggling with their English. Maybe we could help each other out and give each other language lessons. Teehee.

I still need to learn and familiarize myself with the daily admin stuff and the company's products, know the names of the students who come in everyday by heart(this bit is so confusing because their names all sound the same!) and endure coming to work everyday in a corporate attire. That's crisp white blouse, office skirt or slacks, office coat and closed shoes everyday, rain or shine.

But like what the photo says, I employ magical thinking to this job and will rise above the challenge.

My days of watching CSI, Criminal Minds, Desperate Housewives and Pretty Little Liars are numbered.

I'm feeling mixed emotions. You know that feeling when you want to just stay glued to the telly watching all your favorite shows but STILL have money when you need it?

I wish to be in that state forever.

Haha. Anyway, it's been another busy week for me. I finally got my medical exam results yesterday and the doctor gave me a clean bill of health. Fit for employment. So there's really no turning back now. Am officially an Overseas Filipino Worker. Yay!

Just this morning, my new officemate and I headed over to the Work Pass Services Centre in Tanjong Pagar to submit the requirements for our employment pass.

We didn't have to wait that long. The queue was very orderly and staff were very efficient and helpful. It was indeed a very pleasant experience for us. We were done in less than two hours.

With Jojie, my new colleague from Cebu.

Sadly we won't be working at the same branch.

Training officially starts on Tuesday next week. So that gives me five more days to enjoy my carefree bum life. After this, it's work work work and very hectic weekends.

Super excited to start this new chapter in my life!

I Am Grateful

So many good things happened in the last couple of weeks, and for these, I will always be grateful. God is really sooo good!

Thank you that I am now waking up everyday next to the man of my dreams.

Thank you for being able to do the normal, the fun, the cheesy and other couple-y things that married couples do.

Thank you for being able to do my wifey duties.

And thank you for not being in a long distance relationship anymore.

Thank you because I am gifted with a very understanding husband who puts up with my mood swings.

Who makes sure that I take my vitamins everyday, and that I have a warm cup of cocoa waiting for me on the table before I go out for a trip to the city.

Who makes sure that I have money in my wallet and enough credits on my Easylink card (because I'm too lazy to top up, especially when there's still a few good dollars left).

Who doesn't mind if I hog the bed or the blanket on really cold nights.

And who takes care of me and loves me 24/7.

Thank you for the four job interviews and four job offers in less than two months.

And thank you that there were no problems in approving my work permit!

The Waiting Game

Wokay. Now I'm officially on terrified, waiting mode.

Yesterday I went to my future employer's headquarters in Tanah Merah (in wet clothes!) to sign my employment contract and fill up the employment pass form.

To digress, I was caught in a major (major!) downpour on my way back from another last minute interview in Tiong Bahru. I did have an umbrella with me, a small girly one that you can fold and put inside your bag. It provided little protection with that kind of rain, though. You have to be made of something waterproof to not get wet with that!

Okay, fine, no use trying to avoid the deep puddles or rainwater on my pants. But I didn't see that whacko bus driver who didn't even slow down as he was passing through. Yeah, you get the picture. Just like in the movies.

All of us who got in the bus were drenched with water. They were wearing their white school uniforms. Good luck. I was supposed to wear my white pants as well, but luckily I decided to wear my black pair at the last minute. But I managed to dry myself while on the train, thanks to full blast air-conditioning.

Anyway, going back.

Now I'm just waiting for my employment pass to get approved, and then I can start with work.

Everything seems to be okay in the contract. Hubby thinks so, too. No twelve-hour shifts everyday and the workload seems pretty normal. And they're going to assign me somewhere close to where I live, so that's good news, too.

I am praying to God and to all my favorite saints in heaven to help me get through this last step with no major problem.

Hopefully it will be good news next week.

It's so nice to write my first entry for the first day of March, with this fab new blog layout right in front of me.

And it's so great that my first entry is about the wonderful news that I got this morning.

Last week I wrote about this job interview that I went to in Tanah Merah for the education supervisor post, and that I was shortlisted twice. Interview went really well. I was feeling pretty good about the whole thing, thinking that this was the job I think I would love doing for the next year or so.

The HR manager told me they'd call if I got the job, Monday the latest.

So I waited the whole day yesterday, but no call came.

Even if The King's Speech won for Oscar Best Picture, I still could not help feeling a little disappointed, because I actually started to visualize myself wearing my cute office attire, typing away on my keyboard in my little office while children played violins in the next room.

Doh, maybe some other candidate was more qualified than me.

But it's okay. I still said a prayer of thanks, shrugged it off, and told myself that there're still other opportunities out there.

So just imagine my delight this morning when they called me up to tell me that I got the job!

Insert big, big grin here.

The first thing that popped into my head was "Thank you, Lord. You are so kind to me!", and then by instinct, I quickly messaged my hubby, who right away replied with "What did I tell you? Good job, Sweetie!" with smiley faces and all. Then the text brigade to my family back home. If Maximus owned a mobile phone, I would've texted him the good news as well. Hihi.

I'm just so happy right now I'm going to cook Garlic Kangkong for the hubby later. Wahaha.

Still can't be 100% happy, though, because now I'm faced with the last step in the recruitment process here in Singapore: the approval of my employment pass.

Hello! I've finally decided to give my little bloggie a totally new look.

Well, now that I think of it, it's more of a total makeover.

I changed the title, changed the template, discarded some of the widgets I've had for the last two or three years. Colours and fonts are all different, too. Wait, am I really for this? Teehee. (Inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale...)

I don't know, I just woke up wanting a new look. So here I am doing the most tedious task of looking at blog templates that will hopefully work for me.

But I had no idea it could be this exhausting!

So far I'm liking this one. Pretty excited to blog away and see all these beautiful colours. Be blogging real soon.

Another birthday, another birthday blog. If I will continue doing this tradition until our 90th birthdays, I seriously hope I still have good and creative ideas left. Teehee.

Wow, thirty one years of life. Sweet. You know that age is just a number, right? Apart from being wiser than your age, the only other important thing about birthdays is that you look years younger than your actual age. And this you've got down pat.

Ann is my only sister, but I also know that she's the best sister in the world.

Here are 31 reasons why:

1. She's beautiful, like me! Teehee. Even up 'til now, we still get asked by people if we're twins. Distant relatives or friends' parents still get confused which one is Ann and which one is Angel.

2. She has a warped sense of humor. She looks so prim and proper, but lurking somewhere inside her is a Boyoyong clown.

3. She's generous. (But if I was earning as much as her, I'd be generous, too!) Seriously, there had been times in the past when I'd end up short of cash, and she'd give always give me some sort of payday loan. No interest.

4. She's very thoughtful. She likes bringing home food. She remembers birthdays and anniversaries. She remembers the itty bitty details.

5. She's headstrong and determined.

6. She's very accomplished but still remains down-to-earth.

7. She's loyal and loving.

8. She eats like a man but could not care less.

9. She takes care of people she loves.

10. Have I mentioned that she has a warped sense of humor? As in really warped.

11. She's not afraid to speak her mind.

12. She's very optimistic about life and love.

13. She's my big sister sometimes. Yes, even if I'm a year older.

14. She's made to be a wife, and made to be a mom. To six children. Wahaha.

15. She looks fierce and unapproachable, but she's one of the warmest and friendliest people you will ever meet. Most of my friends are her friends, too!

16. She's very easy to please. Just give her a big bag of chicharon, or cook daing na bangus and sinangag for her, or even just a small cup of chai tea, she's a happy girl.

17. She's very prayerful. I know St. Therese of the Child Jesus is her favorite saint.

18. She values her family. She values her friends. She values her man.

19. She has a really close knit group of friends that she spends time with regularly.

20. She spoils Maximus just as much as I do!

21. She thinks she's a diva in her past life, so basically, when a diva moment strikes, she sings and belts with all her might. Even if she's painfully out of tune.

22. She's a hopeless, hopeless romantic.

23. She sees the world through rose-colored glasses.

24. She's not very athletic, and she doesn't like exercise or sweat, but she can shed the pounds just like that when she thinks she's getting too heavy.

25. There's no such thing as sibling rivalry between the two of us.

26. She's a good boss. Tough love when needed, motherly most of the time.

27. She values her job. She'd love to play hooky once in a while, but she just opts not to because there's work to be done.

28. She's still got that little kid inside her.

29. She's brave and not easily ruffled.

30. She's grace under pressure.

31. She's a girl after my own heart, and I love her to death.

Happy, happy, happy 31st birthday! Too bad Eric and I won't be there to join the celebrations. Whatever your birthday plans are, am sure you will have a wonderful birthday. Artie will make sure of that.

Wow, looky here, I've got time to blog!

It's been a real busy past couple of days for me. I feel like 24 hours is not enough. If I'm not meeting friends or showing up on interviews, I'm either cooking dinner, cleaning the house or applying to more jobs. But I'm not complaining. It's all good. Thank you, God, for all the blessings.

Last Tuesday, I finally got to meet Sonnette, one of my good friends from college who's been working here for quite some time now. She's only off from work once a week, so it took us this long to meet. Her boyfie Lee Wei joined in on the date, and I brought along Karen, too.

We went to have something to eat at House of Robert Timms in Wheelock Place, and there we talked non-stop and just caught up with each other's lives. Talked about our other friends back home, talked about work and how weird the Singaporean government is when it comes to awarding permanent residency to foreigners etc. Funny that we had to switch from talking in Tagalog to English, for Lee Wei's sake. But it's great that he can understand Tagalog now! Can even speak a few Tagalog words every now and then.

We spent an hour or two there and then made plans to go to Sentosa one of these weekends. Hopefully this plan will push through. Teehee.

It was great to see Sonnette and Lee Wei again. I just hate the fact that she still has her body from when we were still in college, while I am systematically putting on the pounds. Wahaha.

After saying goodbye to the lovebirds, Karen and I headed to Commonwealth to meet with the hubby. Decided to just have dinner at Secret Recipe. (Another chicken and cheese dish. Good thing my tummy did not choose to disagree this time.)

Oh, and earlier that day I went to Tanah Merah for an interview. The HR officer told me she'd ring me if I was shortlisted. While we were at Robert Timms, my phone rang and it was her again, telling me I'd been shortlisted and that I should come for another interview the following day.

Weekend That Was

My husband is so dedicated at this craft of fattening me up while I'm here in Singapore.

His favorite questions: "Kumain ka na ba?", "Ano gusto mong kainin?", "Sabay tayo maglunch?" or "May food pa ba tayo na stock?"

Good thing there's no weighing scale around here, otherwise, I wouldn't be able to enjoy all these good food everytime. Wehehe.

Anyway, the hubby brought me to Mang Kiko's somewhere in Somerset last Friday for another foodie date. I think I just mentioned to him once that I was craving for Andok's chicken. A couple of days later, there we were at Mang Kiko's, feasting on roasted chicken and liempo, Andok's style!

We'd been eating so much chicken lately that I'm afraid I'd start growing wings soon. I miss eating veggies. This is why I'm gonna cook a veggie dish tonight for dinner. With chicken. Ahaha. We still have a ton left in the fridge, you see.

Oh, and yesterday we were able to visit our good friend's little girl, Gabby. We've been meaning to see her for weeks, but weekends are always busy. But yesterday we were able to squeeze in a little playtime before going to church.

Gabby was a delightful little girl! Sooo cute! I couldn't get enough of her chubby little hands and toes and thighs and arms... Sigh! She treated us all to her non-stop baby giggles, while trying her best to sit up straight for a full minute before toppling over to her side.

It's Movie Time!

I have again unleashed the movie whore in me. Thus, this mini movie review.

When there's nothing left to do around the house, watching movies is a great way to kill time. Don't you agree?

For those of you who haven't seen these movies yet, apologies. I might have some spoilers written down.

Natalie, I totally crushed on you in this movie. You are definitely one of the most beautiful faces and most talented actresses out there.

Anyway, if you're into the dark, twisted, disturbing and psychological thriller types of films, and if you don't mind seeing fully grown men in leotards leaping and and stretching on stage, then this film is for you.

Black Swan revolves around the production of Swan Lake by an elite New York ballet company. Natalie plays the role of driven and talented Nina, who finds a dark side to herself and pushes herself to the brink in portraying both the white and black swans. Crazy, sick, sad story that will leave you troubled long after getting out of the movie house. Kudos to Darren Aronofsky at the director's chair.

I like dark, twisted and disturbing tales, so naturally, I loved this movie. It's enthralling and terrifying at the same time. Brilliant performances from Mila Kunis and Vincent Cassel. Look for Winona Ryder, she has a cameo here. It's quite a surprise because she disappeared off the Hollywood map for a while, and then there she is playing a ballet company has-been. It's so realistic it's eerie. Haha.

Love and Other Drugs

Uh, okay. Where do I start?

First of all, it's so weird watching Jake Gyllenhaal in a romantic comedy movie. Just plain odd.

Second of all, I was waiting for a moment in the movie that would make me change my mind about how silly it was. Sadly, it didn't happen for me. Blech.

Only good thing about this movie is that they look so gorgeous on screen it hurts. You get to see Anne's titties and Jake's booty loads of times here. They spent most of the time fornicating in this movie that when the real story started to unfold, I'd completely lost interest.

All in all, it's nothing I hadn't seen before. Completely forgettable. Next!

Never Let Me Go

I admit I haven't read the book yet (tsk!), but after seeing the film version, I want to read the book more than ever. According to fans, they chopped off a good portion of the book, but it's still a brilliant movie adaptation.

This movie is not for those who like happy ever afters. It's one of the most depressing movies I'd seen in a long time (after The Reader and The Boy In The Striped Pajamas), but since I like movies that really draw strong emotions out of me, I couldn't stop watching it. I was instantly hooked.

I loved it.

This dystopian movie stars Carey Mulligan (girl from An Education), Keira Knightley and Andrew Garfield (from The Social Network). They grow up together in a seemingly ordinary English boarding school in the seventies. Their sad tale unfolds and you'll realize that they are part of this program where children are raised to be human donors of body parts to very sick people.

It's heartbreaking to watch how they pin their hopes on this thing that could help them postpone their 'donation', only to find out in the end that such a thing does not exist at all.

Powerful and unforgettable. It's so sad. It's so good. Sigh. Sigh. Sigh.

Rabbit Hole

I'm a huge Nicole Kidman fan. She's been nominated for Oscar Best Actress for her role in this movie. A well-deserved nomination, indeed!

Aaron Eckhart and Nicole Kidman play this affluent married couple who lost their only son in an accident right in front of their home. A teenage boy was behind the wheel. He hit four-year-old Danny when he rushed out to the street to run after their dog who had broken loose.

This movie shows the everyday battle of both parents, especially Kidman, to live on and rise above the unimaginable grief. She comes to terms with the death of her son by reaching out and knowing the teenage boy who accidentally killed Danny.

I know, I know, it's another sad story. I can't help it. But expect to see powerful performances from Kidman and Eckhart. My favorite scene has to be that one where they were arguing in loud voices because Kidman was trying to rid the whole house of Danny, and Eckhart wanted his presence to still be in their home. Oh my God, I was in tears! Hiccups, snot and all!

But unlike Never Let Me Go, this one has a hopeful, positive ending. There you go. Clap, clap!

Blue Valentine

This romantic drama stars Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling. Out of five stars, I give it a five.

You will fall in love with Dean and Cindy, and their little daughter Frankie. It's a realistic portrayal of how two people can fall madly, passionately in love with each other, and over the years, slowly, fall out of it.

It's funny and heartbreaking. It's sexy and charming. Great and brilliant performances from both Michelle and Ryan!

The whole film is visually arresting and well-written. I totally love it.

The Fighter

Very entertaining, testosterone-fueled, gripping movie from David Russell. But I kept thinking while watching it, if Micky Ward fought like that in real life, Manny Pacquiao is going to cream him. Haha.

It's amazing to see the transformation in Christian Bale here, losing all that weight and leaving his natural bad teeth on. He definitely looks like a has-been boxing pro slash crackhead.

Amy Adams was so funny in this movie. She's so convincing and so bad ass spewing off expletives left and right. Such a departure from her sweetie roles in Enchanted and Leap Year.

As for Mark Wahlberg, he wore the same expression on his face all throughout the film. So there.

Chicken Challenge #2

Breaded Fried Chicken.

This is my dad's recipe. So happy I did not magnificently ruin the dish when I cooked it yesterday.

I had to make do with cooking the chicken in an ordinary frying pan. Didn't have the fancy schmancy deep fryer stuff, ye know. But it worked. Chicken came out well done and crispy.

It's best to marinate the chicken overnight to get all the flavours in, then boil it in water before frying. It keeps them soft and chewy and not rock hard when it cools.

Verdict: Hubby liked it again! Woot woot!

Wednesday With Karen

Met up with one of my college friends' sisters yesterday. She's here in town, to explore and to land a job (like me!). She's staying with her aunt and cousins, also at a condo unit here in Choa Chu Kang.

Can you believe how small our world is?

Meet Karen.

Yeah, she is taller than me. Sigh.

I first met her when she was still in high school, through her sister Tin. Yes, high school. That was, like, a decade ago. Look at her now, all grown up and climbing her way up the corporate ladder. And listen to me now, sounding like an old lady talking about the good ole days. Wahaha.

We had a really long lunch of seafood pasta at Hungry Jack in Yew Tee, and then topped it off ice cream sundaes at McCafe. I even showed her our majestic flat and gave her the grand tour.

She talks in this really soft and sweet voice it's hard to imagine what she sounds like when she's livid with anger. Teehee.

Current Status: Looking and Interested

For a job, that is. Teehee.

My perfect (read: PETIKS) Singapore job remains elusive.

I had another job offer last Monday. I'm still so thankful that I was blessed with something like that, but it wasn't exactly the kind of job that I was looking for.

It was a telesales position. I did my best during the phone interview, though. The interviewer was a friend of a friend, so I had to at least sound interested and interesting.

Phone interview went smoothly. Later that day I got another call from them asking me to come over Monday for a final interview. Yikes.

Monday came and there I was, telling the interviewer that I had no solid outbound sales experience. I didn't have a clue what their business was about (my bad), or what CRM and B2B stand for (don't know techie IT shit to save my life). All I knew was that the job involved selling and computer software, both of which are my waterloo!

I didn't even attempt to impress the boss with my answers. I didn't say that I knew this or knew that when I clearly had no idea what it's about. I even told her that if she thought that I wasn't fit for the position, it's totally fine with me. I only came to find out more about the position and see if I liked it or not.

She surprised me by saying that she's willing to give me a try, and that I should come back on Wednesday to start with training.

And I replied with "Really?"

Seriously.

To cut the story short, I declined their generous offer later that day.

So there.

Patience is a virtue. I guess I'm gonna have to wait a little more. *While praying that God has not grown exasperated with me yet.*

The Chicken Challenge

The last time my hubby and I made a trip to the grocery store, we bought this huge bag of frozen chicken. Deboned, filleted, whatever you call it, but a really big bag of chicken.

I remember staring at it, lying on the kitchen counter, thinking what the hell I'm supposed do with it given that I didn't have a lot of ingredients in my kitchen arsenal.

Hmmkay. Time to get a little creative, then.

Found some butter and chopped garlic in the fridge. I put a generous amount of garlic pepper, ground chillies, and garlic powder on the chicken, and voila!

No frills, instant Garlic Chicken

Verdict: The hubby liked it!

One taste and he said "Sarap ah!". I think he had two or three servings of rice, too. That's something from someone who doesn't like to eat too much rice at night.

Woot woot!

* I also prepared Chicken Adobo the other day but was unable to take a photo of it. Needless to say, it was also a success. Hubby loved it. Wow, I'm on a roll! Haha!
